What's normal
Jackals trotting through camp at night. Hyena prints around the braai pit at dawn. Baboons checking unattended tables. Geckos in the ablution block. None of this is a problem if food is locked in the vehicle.
The food rule
Nothing — nothing — sleeps outside the vehicle. Fridge stays in the cab or the canopy. Bread bag, snacks, even toothpaste in jackal areas. This is the single rule that keeps camp problems at zero.
Elephants in camp
At Hoada, Brandberg White Lady, and parts of Damaraland, desert elephants do walk through camp at night. Stay in the roof tent. They're calm if not surprised. Lodges and camps brief you on arrival.
