Namibia's desert elephants are the same species as Etosha's, but adapted to survive on dry riverbed forage. Smaller herds, longer legs, broader feet. About 600 remain, mostly in Damaraland.
Where they are
The Huab, Ugab, Uniab and Hoarusib river valleys west of Twyfelfontein. They move with rain and fodder — even local guides have to track them fresh.
How to see them
Book a guided tracking drive with Mowani, Camp Kipwe, Damaraland Camp or Hoada — half or full day. Self-driving into the riverbeds without a guide is unsafe (deep sand, the elephants will charge if startled).
What to expect
You may track for hours. When you find a breeding herd in the Huab, you're 20–50m from elephants in landscape that looks like Mars. Photographers: bring 70-200mm minimum.
