Kayaking with Cape Fur Seals in Walvis Bay

The calmest, family-friendliest Namibia activity — and the one most underrated by adults.

Walvis Bay lagoon hosts thousands of Cape fur seals. Paddle a sit-on-top kayak through them and they swim under, around and occasionally onto your kayak. Calm water, no swell — it's lagoon, not ocean.

    The format

Half-day from Walvis Bay (Pelican Point operators). 07:00 or 08:00 launch, two hours on the water, hot chocolate and oysters on the beach after.

    Family-friendly

Kids from 6+ on a tandem with a parent. Wetsuits and life jackets provided. Two operators we rate: Eco-Marine and Jeanne's Eco.

    Why adults shouldn't skip it

The seals are bold and curious — eye-level with a 200kg male at one metre is something. Better photos than a boat trip because you're on the water, not above it.
