Sandwich Harbour is the only place on earth where 100m-high dunes fall straight into the ocean. The 4x4 day-tour from Walvis Bay is one of two Namibia activities (the other is the Sossusvlei balloon) we tell every client to pre-book.
The tour structure
09:00 pickup from your lodge. Drive south along the lagoon (flamingos, pelicans). Cross salt pans, then dune belt. Lunch — a properly catered spread — between dune and ocean. Afternoon: dune-driving up onto the high ridge. 16:00 back at your lodge.
Why it needs to be guided
Sandwich Harbour is a tidal route. The dunes shift weekly and the recovery story isn't fun if you misjudge a slip face. Self-driving is technically possible but a bad idea.
Who shouldn't do it
People with serious back issues — the dune driving has some big drops. Otherwise fine for all ages — we've sent 8-year-olds and 80-year-olds and both came back grinning.
