    Why Namibia

    Dry air, no humidity, almost zero light pollution. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye as a textured arc, not a vague smudge. The Magellanic Clouds (only visible from southern hemisphere) sit straight overhead.

    Best months

    New moon nights, May–August. Galactic core of the Milky Way is overhead and the air is driest. Avoid full moon — bright moonlight washes out the stars.

    Best spots

    NamibRand Nature Reserve (Wolwedans, &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge). Sesriem campsite away from the gate lights. Hoada Campsite in Damaraland. Anywhere in Kaokoland.

    Practical

    Let your eyes adapt for 20 minutes (no phone screens). Red headtorch only. Bring a fleece — clear desert nights are cold even in October.
