How much to carry
Minimum 5L per person per day for the classic loop. Double that off the C-roads. A Hilux camper has space for two 25L jerry cans — use them.
Where to refill
Every campsite has potable water at the gate or ablution block. Sesriem, Halali and most Gondwana campsites are safe to drink. Smaller community sites — boil or filter to be safe.
Don't drink tap water in
Some Kavango / Caprivi small towns and any borehole-fed campsite where the water tastes mineralised. Stick to bottled water in the deep north.
The non-negotiable
Always carry 5L per person in the car even on day drives. If you break down between regions, that water is what keeps you safe until help arrives.
