Both work. They suit different trips. Honest pros and cons after 200+ rentals.

    Roof tent โ€” pros

Up off the ground (no critters, no thorny terrain). Fast setup (under 5 minutes). Always-made bed. Better for short-stay multi-camp trips where you're up and moving every 1โ€“2 days.

    Roof tent โ€” cons

Ladder access (not ideal for elderly travellers). Can sway in wind. Slightly worse fuel economy on the highway. More expensive rental.

    Ground tent โ€” pros

Cheaper rental. More floor space if you're staying multiple nights. Easier for elderly or anyone with knee issues. Lower wind profile when pitched.

    Ground tent โ€” cons

Slower setup. Need to check for scorpions and thorns. Wet ground is a problem in Caprivi green season.

    Our default recommendation

Roof tent for 2 travellers on a moving itinerary. Ground tent for families of 4 staying 2+ nights per stop, or anyone over 65.
