Both are Toyota Hilux Double Cabs. The right one depends on your route, group size and whether you're camping. Here's the honest call.

We get this question every week. Both the 2.4 and 2.8 Toyota Hilux Double Cab are excellent Namibia vehicles — the difference matters more on some routes than others.

    Hilux 2.4 Double Cab — the all-rounder

150kW, full 4x4 with low range. Plenty for the classic Windhoek → SossusvleiSwakopmundDamaralandEtosha loop. Lighter on fuel (around 9L/100km on tar). The right call for two travellers and tar-and-gravel-only routes.

Hilux 2.8 Double Cab — the workhorse

Significantly more torque (500Nm). Same vehicle, but with the engine for deep sand, towing a heavy camping setup, and climbing passes like Spreetshoogte fully loaded. The right call for families of four, anyone running a roof tent + fridge + dual battery, or routes into Kaokoland.

How to decide in 10 seconds

Two travellers, lodges only, classic route → 2.4. Four travellers OR camping-equipped OR going off the C-roads → 2.8. If 50/50, take the 2.8.
