We get this question every week. Both the 2.4 and 2.8 Toyota Hilux Double Cab are excellent Namibia vehicles — the difference matters more on some routes than others.
Hilux 2.4 Double Cab — the all-rounder
150kW, full 4x4 with low range. Plenty for the classic Windhoek → Sossusvlei → Swakopmund → Damaraland → Etosha loop. Lighter on fuel (around 9L/100km on tar). The right call for two travellers and tar-and-gravel-only routes.
Hilux 2.8 Double Cab — the workhorse
Significantly more torque (500Nm). Same vehicle, but with the engine for deep sand, towing a heavy camping setup, and climbing passes like Spreetshoogte fully loaded. The right call for families of four, anyone running a roof tent + fridge + dual battery, or routes into Kaokoland.
How to decide in 10 seconds
Two travellers, lodges only, classic route → 2.4. Four travellers OR camping-equipped OR going off the C-roads → 2.8. If 50/50, take the 2.8.
