Twyfelfontein in Damaraland holds over 2,000 rock engravings — some 6,000 years old. The site is UNESCO listed and visits are guide-only, leaving from the visitor centre.
When to visit
First slot of the morning (08:00) or last slot of the afternoon (16:00). Midday is brutal — direct sun on dark rocks, 35°C+ in summer. Engravings are also harder to read in flat light.
The walking circuit
A 60–90 minute guided walk on rough rock. Wear closed shoes, bring water and a hat. Two main routes — the shorter Lion Man trail and the longer route past the dancing kudu.
Combine with
Burnt Mountain (5 minutes away) and the Organ Pipes basalt columns. All three in a half day. Then back to your Damaraland lodge for sundowner.
