Okaukuejo's floodlit waterhole runs from sunset to sunrise inside Etosha's western camp. There's no entry fee for guests, you bring your own drinks, and over 4 hours you can see more high-stakes wildlife behaviour than on most day game drives.
The rhythm
Sunset: jackal, springbok arrive. 19:00–20:00: elephant family groups, sometimes 30+ animals. 20:00–22:00: black rhino — almost nightly in the dry months. 22:00 onwards: lion, hyena, sometimes leopard at the edges.
How to play it
Eat early at the camp restaurant. Be at the waterhole by 18:30. Bring a fleece (cold even in October). Skip your camera if you don't have a fast lens — light is brutal. Just watch.
The etiquette
Whispers only. No phone screens — the white light ruins it for everyone. No flash. The rhinos are wild — they can smell you, hear you, and they will leave if disturbed.
