Namibia's Iconic Destinations

The dunes, wildlife and wild coastlines that make Namibia unforgettable — combined into one seamless self-drive route.

Namibia's distances are big and its highlights are spread across the country. Instead of researching each region separately, tell us where you want to go and we'll combine the right destinations, drive times, lodges and 4x4 into one realistic itinerary.

    Sossusvlei & Namib Desert

Red dunes, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon — best paired with 2 nights at Sesriem or a desert lodge.

    Etosha National Park

Self-drive Big Five game viewing from Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni, or stay at a private lodge on the edge of the park.

    Damaraland & Twyfelfontein

Desert elephants, ancient rock art and dramatic granite landscapes — the heart of north-western Namibia.

    Swakopmund & Walvis Bay

The Atlantic coast for kayaking with seals, Sandwich Harbour, scenic flights and a welcome rest day.

    Fish River Canyon & Kalahari

Second-largest canyon in the world plus the red Kalahari — perfect for southern Namibia loops.

    Caprivi (Zambezi Region)

Rivers, hippos and lush bush — add it on for 18–21 day trips and combine with Botswana.

Choosing where to go in Namibia

First-time visitors usually focus on three things: the red dunes at Sossusvlei, wildlife at Etosha on a guided safari, and the Atlantic coast around Swakopmund. A 10-day self-drive route comfortably covers all three plus Damaraland for desert elephants and rock art. From 14 days you can add Fish River Canyon and the Kalahari in the south; from 18–21 days the Caprivi (Zambezi) Region opens up for water-based wildlife and a Victoria Falls add-on. We'll guide you on what to leave out — Namibia is bigger than it looks and over-packing the route is the most common first-trip mistake.

Exploring these destinations is best done with a fully equipped 4x4. Our own Windhoek fleet has camping-equipped Toyota Hilux 4x4s for self-drive safaris, with delivery from Hosea Kutako International Airport and accommodation pre-booked through our accommodation desk.

    When to visit each region

Etosha is best for game viewing in the dry months (May–October) when wildlife concentrates at waterholes. Sossusvlei is rewarding year-round but coolest in winter. The coast is misty and chilly most of the year — pack a jacket. Caprivi peaks for birdlife from November to April when summer migrants arrive, but roads can be wet. We'll match your travel month to the regions that shine.

    Namibia, region by region

Red dunes in the south, gravel mountains in the west, elephant rivers in the north-east.

10 days is the sweet spot for first-time visitors covering Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha. 14 days adds the south (Kalahari, Fish River Canyon). 18–21 days lets you slow down and add the Caprivi or Kaokoland.

Yes — most clients flying out via Vic Falls add 2–3 nights at Chobe or Livingstone after the Caprivi. We arrange the cross-border paperwork on the 4x4 and book the onward stays.

Namibia is one of the safest self-drive countries in Africa. Roads are quiet, towns are calm, and our 4x4 rentals come with 24/7 roadside support and WhatsApp backup from our desk.

Inside the park: Sesriem Campsite or Sossus Dune Lodge for early gate access. Outside the park: Namib Desert Lodge, Desert Camp or Le Mirage — slightly longer drive but excellent value and views.

May–October is the dry winter season — cooler nights, easier game viewing at Etosha waterholes, reliable gravel-road conditions. November–April is greener, warmer, dramatic skies; some northern roads can be wet. Sossusvlei dunes look spectacular year-round.

Damaraland. The granite landscapes around Twyfelfontein, desert-adapted elephants and the silence of the Brandberg are bucket-list, but Damaraland gets less press than Sossusvlei or Etosha.

Sossusvlei: 2 nights. Swakopmund: 2 nights. Damaraland: 2 nights. Etosha: 2–3 nights. Kalahari/Fish River: 1–2 nights each. One-night stops anywhere except transit hubs are usually a mistake — drive times are too long.

Roughly — safe gravel speed is 80 km/h. Add 20–30% to Google's estimate for B/C roads and 40%+ for D-roads in Damaraland and Kaokoland.

South of Henties Bay (Cape Cross seals, Zeila shipwreck) is a good day from Swakopmund. The full Skeleton Coast National Park is a fly-in destination — we arrange charter flights to Hoanib or Shipwreck Lodge.

Sandwich Harbour 4x4, kayak with seals at Walvis Bay, scenic flights over the Skeleton Coast, quad biking and sandboarding on the dune belt, plus a welcome rest day with proper coffee and German bakeries.

Yes — guided tracking in Damaraland's ephemeral riverbeds (Huab, Hoanib, Ugab). Half-day or full-day options from local lodges. You need a guide — the herds move and the access tracks are seasonal.

On 18+ day trips, yes. Rivers, hippos, elephants and excellent birdlife — and a natural bridge to Botswana's Chobe or Zambia's Livingstone for a Vic Falls finish.

Swakopmund (kayak with seals, sandboarding), Sossusvlei (Big Daddy, Deadvlei), Etosha (safe in-vehicle game viewing), Damaraland (rock art, desert elephants). Skip remote Kaokoland tracks for under-10s.

Kaokoland and Khaudum unless you're an experienced 4x4 driver with 18+ days. Lüderitz on a 10-day trip — it's a long detour. The full Skeleton Coast unless you're flying in.

Etosha and Namib-Naukluft entry permits (paid at gate). Community conservancy fees in Damaraland and Kaokoland (Torra, Doro !Nawas, Marienfluss). Cross-border letters for the 4x4 if leaving Namibia. We handle all paperwork.
