Namibia has the lowest population density in sub-Saharan Africa and one of the lowest violent crime rates outside the cities. Solo self-drive is genuinely safe — but isolation is the bigger risk than crime.
The actual risks
Single-vehicle rollovers on gravel. Breakdowns on remote C-roads with no signal. Animals at dusk. None of these are crime issues — they're isolation issues.
How to mitigate
Share a daily itinerary with someone at home. Buy a local MTC SIM with data — signal exists at every lodge and most towns. Never drive after dusk. Carry 5L water in the car always. Lodges welcome solo travellers — Namibia hospitality is excellent.
Where it gets harder
Kaokoland, Van Zyl's Pass and the deep west should not be done solo. Stick to the classic loop solo, and book a guide for the off-piste regions.
