A Namibia self-drive is one of the great African road trips. It's also the first time most people drive 400km on gravel in a day. Here's what to know before you turn the key.
Distances feel longer than they look
A 300km gravel day takes 5 hours including stops. Don't trust Google Maps' optimistic ETAs — add 25%. Aim to be at the lodge by 16:00 every day.
The first hour is the riskiest
Statistically, most rental incidents happen in the first 60–90 minutes of gravel driving while the driver is still learning the feel. Start slow (60–70km/h), build up to 80.
Animals on the road
Warthog, kudu, oryx, even cattle. Never drive after dusk between regions — this is the single biggest risk factor. Plan arrivals before sunset.
