    The 7 Mistakes First-Time Namibia Self-Drivers Make

Years of debriefs with returning clients. The same seven mistakes come up every season — here's how to avoid them.

    1. Driving too fast on gravel

80km/h is the safe max. Many do 100+. Statistically, this is the single biggest cause of rental rollovers in Namibia.

    2. Driving after dusk

Animals on the road, no street lighting, oncoming high beams. Be at the lodge by sunset, always.

    3. Underestimating distances

Google Maps lies on Namibian gravel. Add 25% to every ETA.

    4. Trying to fit too much in

Cutting Damaraland to 1 night is fine. Cutting Etosha to 1 night is a mistake.

    5. Skipping pre-booked activities

Sandwich Harbour and Sossusvlei balloon sell out 4–6 weeks ahead in peak season. Book at the same time as the trip.

    6. Paying for water bottles all trip

Tap water is safe in Windhoek, Swakopmund, Sesriem and most NWR camps. Bring a refillable bottle.

    7. Ignoring the briefing

The 90-minute handover at delivery covers tyre changes, gear selection on dunes, and what to do if something breaks. Pay attention.
