Travelling Namibia with Pets — What's Actually Possible

South African and Namibian residents bring dogs all the time. International travellers, not so much. The honest options.

    International travellers

Realistically not feasible. Import permits, rabies titre tests, 30-day quarantine on return for most EU/UK destinations. Leave the pet at home.

    South African road-trippers

Pets travel between SA and Namibia easily — vet certificate at the border. Plenty of lodges accept dogs (Bagatelle Kalahari, Kalahari Anib, several Gondwana). Etosha NP doesn't allow pets — book outside or kennel in Windhoek.

    Pet-friendly lodges to know

Gondwana publishes a pet-friendly list. Most Sossusvlei and Damaraland lodges are not pet-friendly — wildlife conflicts.

    Practical

Bring a crash-tested carrier for the 4x4. Heat is the bigger risk than wildlife — keep the dog in air-con on driving days, never in a parked car.
