Lüderitz and Kolmanskop — The Southern Detour

A 6-hour drive from Sossusvlei to a German ghost town swallowed by dunes. When it's worth it.

Kolmanskop is a 1908 diamond town abandoned in the 1950s, slowly being reclaimed by the desert. Photographically extraordinary. Logistically: it's a real commitment to get there.

    Where it fits

Only on trips of 14+ days with Fish River Canyon already included. Pair: Sossusvlei → Fish River (2n) → Lüderitz (1n) → back via the south to Windhoek. Adds 3 days.

    When to go inside

Dawn photo permit (bookable in advance) gives 1 hour alone in the buildings before the day-tour groups arrive. This is the only way to shoot it properly. Worth the early start.

    Lüderitz itself

Atmospheric harbour town with German colonial architecture. One overnight is plenty. Don't expect food choice — bring snacks.
