Epupa Falls sit on the Kunene River bordering Angola, surrounded by Himba settlements and baobabs. It's spectacular and remote — and a real commitment to reach.
The drive
Windhoek → Opuwo (700km, 9 hours including stops). Opuwo → Epupa (200km, 4 hours of slow gravel). Realistically two long driving days each way.
Why go
The falls themselves are dramatic. The Himba villages around Epupa are the most accessible authentic encounter in Namibia. The night sky over the Kunene is otherworldly.
Honest caveat
Add 6 days to your trip minimum. Skip if you have under 18 days total — the drive eats too much. Better as a fly-in extension (charter Windhoek → Opuwo, 2 hours).
When to go
May–September for the falls volume (winter rains). October–November the falls thin. Avoid January–March — roads flood and Himba villages move.
