No direct flights. The three sensible routings, plus what to know about the 20+ hour journey.

    Three viable routings

    1) US → Frankfurt → Windhoek (Lufthansa, the classic). 2) US → Doha → Windhoek (Qatar, often best business class). 3) US → Johannesburg → Windhoek (Delta + Airlink, more legs but works from JFK and ATL).

    Total journey

Realistically 22–28 hours door to door from the East Coast, 28–34 hours from the West Coast. Plan one full recovery day in Windhoek before driving — non-negotiable.

    Visas (changed April 2025)

USA passport holders now require a Namibian visa — this used to be visa-free. Cost N$1,600 (≈ US$90), valid 30 days, multiple entry. Apply online in advance via the official e-Visa portal at eservices.mhaiss.gov.na — strongly recommended over on-arrival, which carries a N$400 service fee and longer queues. 6 months passport validity + 3 blank pages required. Same rule now applies to most EU and UK passport holders.

    Best season for US travellers

May, June, September, October — avoid US summer crowds and overlap with Namibia's dry game-viewing months. July–August workable but book early.
