High Season — May to October
Dry, cool to cold mornings (5–12°C), warm dry days (22–28°C), no rain, no mosquitoes. Etosha is at its absolute best as wildlife concentrates around remaining waterholes. International demand peaks in July–September — book 6–9 months ahead.
Green Season — November to April
Short, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms (usually 30–60 minutes, never an all-day washout). Lush green Damaraland and Caprivi. Baby animals. Towering cumulus clouds = the best photography light of the year. Rates 25–40% lower.
Which is right for you
First-time safari, kids, must-see-Etosha-at-its-peak → High Season. Photographer, second visit, value-conscious → Green Season. Undecided → June or late November.
What about December and January?
Hot in the dune country (35°C+) and the wettest weeks of the year. Lodges full of South African family holidaymakers — book early. Different trip, still rewarding.
