Kalahari Red Dunes — Worth Adding to Your Trip?

Two hours south-east of Windhoek and an entirely different desert. When it's worth the night, when to skip it.

The Kalahari's red linear dunes are completely different from the Namib's sand seas — softer, grassed, full of oryx and springbok. Kalahari Anib Lodge and Bagatelle make it an easy add.

    When to add it

Day 1 of a 14+ day trip. Land Windhoek by 14:00, 2-hour drive to Kalahari, sundowner dune walk, restart the next morning fresh. Best jetlag-buffer of the country.

    When to skip

Trips of 10 days or fewer. The Namib will give you more dramatic dune experiences — Kalahari becomes redundant.

    What to do there

Sunset dune walk (included at most lodges). Optional morning game drive — black-maned Kalahari lion in some private reserves. Otherwise it's a slow-down stop, not an activity stop.
