Sesriem is NWR's campsite inside the Sossusvlei gate. Book it 6+ months ahead. It books out faster than any other Namibia campsite.
Why it's worth it
The gate to Sossusvlei opens an hour earlier for inside-gate guests than for day-visitors. That hour is what gets you to Deadvlei or Dune 45 at sunrise without 200 other people in the frame.
What it's actually like
Bare stands with a low wall, a tap, a braai pit and a shade tree. Communal ablutions — clean but basic. Big and dusty. Hot in summer (40°C+), cold in winter (–2°C overnight). Booking is per stand, max 8 people.
Tips
Pitch with your tent door away from the gravel road (dust). Arrive by 15:00 — checkin queues in peak season. Stock up on ice and groceries at Solitaire on the way in — Sesriem's tiny shop is overpriced and limited.
