Truly Namibian Potjie Recipe

Namibia Tours and Safaris | Namibia Destinations

A potjie is fantastic for any safari you go on, it is a very social occasion with everyone helping out with the preparation of the meat and vegetables and then sitting around the fire as it bubbles away. This is a great recipe for when you are in Namibia, or just chilling out on the back porch at home.

3 TBS of olive oil
1.5kg neck of mutton, sliced into pieces
2 big onions, chopped
500g carrots
500g baby potatoes
200g mushrooms
200g baby marrows
1 TBS sugar
2 TSP mild curry powder
1 TSP ground turmeric
120ml fresh cream
Salt and pepper to taste

Heat the oil in a potjie pot. Add the meat and cook until browned, adding a few pieces at a time, generously season with salt and pepper. Remove the meat and set aside. Add the chopped onions and sauté until soft but not fried for about 4 minutes. Return the meat to the pot, then add enough water to cover the ingredients. Place the lid on and simmer gently for one hour. Now you can add mushrooms and vegetables and continue simmering for another half an hour. Mix the sugar and the spices with the fresh cream in a separate bowl and add to the stew. Simmer for another 20 minutes. Mix the potjie gently to prevent the vegetables from breaking. Add a little bit of hot water if needed and keep simmering for 15 more minutes.

Serve with rice and enjoy!
